Suicide: The Numbers

"The term 'troops' frequently overshadows the individuality of our military members, reducing fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, and siblings to mere anonymous statistics. It is crucial to remember that these are real people who have endured immeasurable, yet often unseen, emotional wounds.

Let us take a moment to acknowledge these brave patriots who, unfortunately, did not receive the necessary support to fully recover from the challenges they faced on their personal battlefields. The figures below, sourced from the Defense Suicide Prevention, represent data from 2022 and the first quarter of 2023."

According to the Defense Suicide Prevention Office (2023), from 2016 through 2022,
4,441 military members ended their lives. That is more Americans needlessly lost than
those on 9/11. This is staggering. It is time to change the way we have been going
about protecting the precious lives of our members in uniform.

Why MiOT?

The process commences by acknowledging that despite good intentions, the plethora of programs implemented in the past have not yielded the desired results.

A fundamental principle shared by all successful teams, whether in the military or sports, is the recognition of the value each member brings. Unifying from within fortifies the collective, and those who have navigated their way through tough times and emerged stronger are best equipped to assist teammates facing similar challenges. While external coaches can be present on the sidelines, the accounts of triumphant comebacks, as often showcased in ESPN's inside stories, consistently highlight players who led by example. These players experienced the highs and lows, enabling them to speak from a place of genuine understanding, offering the precise blend of encouragement and wisdom, uniquely attainable by those who have treaded the same path.

Gradually, the players on the disabled list (DL) return, having grasped the essence of resilience. They, in turn, extend their hands to support the next player, perpetuating the cycle of support and growth. And so it continues, creating a chain of solidarity and encouragement within the team.

The Simplicity of the MiOT Program

  • MiOT is designed to be user-friendly, and volunteers do not require any special skills other than a willingness to listen when needed (5-15 minutes per encounter).

  • UNDER COPYRIGHT: CONTENT REMOVED DUE TO UNSAVORY FOLKS STEALING THE MiOT PROGRAM WORK PUT TOGETHER ON THE NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE OF ANOTHER.

  • Here is what Maj. (Ret.) Revit needs you to know and advance to Sec. Hegseth and every member of Congress:  MiOT works.  Every other expensive, complicated, civilian-involved/run suicide prevention program uselessly rolled out in decades of futile DSPO groping in the dark never made a measurable difference in lassoing the climbing across-the-board loss of our best Americans.

  • The number one reason?  Let's finally speak into the light what has been whispered in dark corners of mental stigma fear amongst military members of all ranks, all SMEs, and decorations:  "They don't understand me.  They just don't get it."  And they don't.

  • The "they" in this equation is a combination of leadership who rarely understand mental health signs and symptoms, especially as it may or may not impact a member's career. (Newsflash:  PTSD does not equal instant exit). The civilian psychological providers most often have not ever worn the uniform, compounded by their lack of knowledge regarding the stigma of mental health up and down the ranks made worse by an often lack of understanding as to how mental health diagnoses, signs, and symptoms and their possible prescribed medications may impact members' careers.  The ulcer-inspiring stark fear surrounding approaching a mental health provider for help causes such anxiety most members use alternate means such as alcohol to tamp down the real issues.

  • Never have so many dark rumors exploded so grandly and consistently without merit since the Lee Harvey Oswald conspiracy rumors whooshed from zero into an F-5 tornado in one bullet from Jack Ruby.

  • DSPO has tried hard to slay the dragon of the 22-A-Day tag beleaguering every component of our nation's services. Clearly, we cannot, simply cannot under any rational governmental system, march forward one more single quarter without making a monumental, bold overhaul of the likes that every single military member and each Department of Defense colleague will do a neck-snap to attention.

  • Their first thought will be, "Wow.  They are finally listening to us."

  • It is my sincere hope as I write this, being aware of visitors at 0100, 0300, and 0400 this week, that those visitors are not bad actors, taking this idea born upon the broken pieces of my life after quite a tumultuous deployment in which I was certain my return would be only if they could locate my body somewhere in the banana field.

  • I have no thoughts of living in a mansion off of MiOT.  It is my contribution to help light the way for those carrying the torch of freedom behind me.  Anyone who steals, yes, I'm calling you out, this idea bestowed upon me by my Lord, may God have no mercy upon thee.

The Shortest Peek

  • A peek:  This program can be stood up in a matter of weeks.  In every unit, squadron, ship, base, submarine or other entity.

  • This program will be so cost-effective even Sen. Rand Paul will be hard-pressed not to want to hand out a gold star.

  • The best asset of this program is dazzling.

MiOT Goal

By establishing a more interconnected support system to aid members in acute emotional states, the presence of MiOT will create a safe environment for open conversations. This, in turn, will foster stronger bonds among individuals. Additionally, the program will work towards destigmatizing mental health concerns, promoting proper use of the VA system and community support groups, all of which will contribute to building a stronger and more resilient team.
