Suicide: The Numbers

"The term 'troops' frequently overshadows the individuality of our military members, reducing fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, and siblings to mere anonymous statistics. It is crucial to remember that these are real people who have endured immeasurable, yet often unseen, emotional wounds.

Let us take a moment to acknowledge these brave patriots who, unfortunately, did not receive the necessary support to fully recover from the challenges they faced on their personal battlefields. The figures below, sourced from the Defense Suicide Prevention, represent data from 2022 and the first quarter of 2023."

According to the Defense Suicide Prevention Office (2023), from 2016 through 2022,
4,441 military members ended their lives. That is more Americans needlessly lost than
those on 9/11. This is staggering. It is time to change the way we have been going
about protecting the precious lives of our members in uniform.

Why MiOT?

The process commences by acknowledging that despite good intentions, the plethora of programs implemented in the past have not yielded the desired results.

A fundamental principle shared by all successful teams, whether in the military or sports, is the recognition of the value each member brings. Unifying from within fortifies the collective, and those who have navigated their way through tough times and emerged stronger are best equipped to assist teammates facing similar challenges. While external coaches can be present on the sidelines, the accounts of triumphant comebacks, as often showcased in ESPN's inside stories, consistently highlight players who led by example. These players experienced the highs and lows, enabling them to speak from a place of genuine understanding, offering the precise blend of encouragement and wisdom, uniquely attainable by those who have treaded the same path.

Gradually, the players on the disabled list (DL) return, having grasped the essence of resilience. They, in turn, extend their hands to support the next player, perpetuating the cycle of support and growth. And so it continues, creating a chain of solidarity and encouragement within the team.

The Simplicity of the MiOT Program

  • MiOT is designed to be user-friendly, and volunteers do not require any special skills other than a willingness to listen when needed (5-15 minutes per encounter).

  • Volunteers will receive training to assist members in seeking higher levels of care when necessary.

  • The distribution of small cards containing local and national resources is one of the ways volunteers support individuals.

  • The collective effort of volunteers acts as a catalyst for transforming the overall service's attitude.

  • Coordination Framework

  • Each wing will have one central MiOT volunteer coordinator.

  • Assistant coordinators will be assigned based on base units or squadrons.

  • There will be no limit on the number of volunteers, aiming to saturate each facility with volunteers to ensure availability.

  • The program will be marketed as brief ten-to-fifteen-minute encounters, allowing users to express their emotions freely and briefly discuss their concerns.

  • Prolonged discussions are avoided, except under exceptional circumstances where an additional MiOT member may be called upon to assess the situation.

  • The focus of conversations is primarily on addressing life stressors that could potentially lead to emotional tipping points, rather than dwelling on traumatic events.

MiOT Goal

By establishing a more interconnected support system to aid members in acute emotional states, the presence of MiOT will create a safe environment for open conversations. This, in turn, will foster stronger bonds among individuals. Additionally, the program will work towards destigmatizing mental health concerns, promoting proper use of the VA system and community support groups, all of which will contribute to building a stronger and more resilient team.
